The
Christmas holiday is fraught with a plethora of symbols and icons.
Many of the icons known so well today are the creations of western
culture. While Santa Claus is a historical figure with a long and
varied history, his elves and reindeer have been in existence a
relatively short time in comparison. Rudolph, for example, became
a star in when he came to life in Gene Autry’s performance
of the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in 1949.
This famous song, written by John Mark, was such a success that
it led to the creation of another famous icon of Christmas tradition.
Frosty has got to be the most famous snowman in all of history.
He came to life in the song “Frosty the Snowman” written
by Jack Nelson and Steve Rollins. This writing duo saw the amazing
success of “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer” and wanted
in on the fortune. They thought that the creation was amazingly
simple, maybe even a little bit stupid. They believed that they
could use the idea to spawn something different but similar in order
to amass great wealth. They were right.
Nelson and Rollins decided to use a humble snowman and a catchy
tune to join the bandwagon. Before the end of the next summer, they
pitched the song to Gene Autry, who eagerly agreed. Autry was hoping
for another success like the one he had the year before.
The performance was a hit. And although it did not have the same
level of success as its predecessor, Frosty the Snowman certainly
has gone down in history, becoming an icon all its own. The song
has been sung by children for decades and has even been turned into
an animated film for children.
Frosty the Snow Man was a jolly, happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of
coal.
Frosty the Snow Man is a fairy tale they say;
He was made of snow, but the children know how he came to life
one day.
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found,
For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around.
Oh, Frosty the Snow Man was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as
you and me.
Frosty the Snow Man knew the sun was hot that day,
So he said, "Let's run and we'll have some fun now before
I melt away."
Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand,
Running here and there all around the square, sayin', "Catch
me if you can."
He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop,
And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler "Stop!"
For Frosty the Snow Man had to hurry on his way,
But he waved good-bye, sayin', "Don't you cry; I'll be back
again someday."
Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go;
Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of
snow.
