When
the weather outside is cold, everyone knows it is important to keep
warm. But, what many people don’t realize is that it is also
important to keep pets warm in this kind of weather. Mistakenly,
many believe that the fur on an animal’s body is enough to
withstand even the coldest of temperatures. This, however, isn’t
true.
While a pet’s fur will keep them warm to a point, the fur
doesn’t offer complete protection from bad weather. This is
especially true for snow and rain. Even if the weather isn’t
wet, your pet’s fur is still not enough for them to be able
to safely stay warm if the temperature drops extremely low.
One of the best ways to keep your pets warm in the wintertime is
the obvious—keep them inside. If the temperature will be dropping,
you can simply bring pets indoors to allow them to stay warm all
winter long. If it is possible for you to bring pets indoors for
the winter, you should create a sleep area for them that is in a
warm part of the house, and allow them to have a pet bed, blankets,
or other items to help them keep warm. Many pet owners prefer to
keep their pet in a pet carrier with blankets at night. These often
give the pet comfort while staying warm, plus they give the owners
peace of mind that the pet is not running around tearing anything
up while they sleep.
If it isn’t possible for you to bring your pet indoors for
cool weather, there are still a few things you can do to help make
it as warm as possible for your pet while outdoors in dreary cold
weather. The first, and possibly most important thing, is to provide
your pet with some sort of shelter from the cold. While a pet carrier
can work in this situation, it is best to use a better form of protection,
such as a doghouse. These are made thicker (and the better ones
even include such amenities as insulation and shingles on the roof).
Providing your pet with a shelter such as this can keep wind, rain,
and snow out, and this can keep your pet significantly warmer all
winter long.
The placement of the pet’s sleep area is also very important.
You should put it out of the way of the north wind to prevent much
of the cold from coming in. By placing your pet’s house on
the south side of either your own home or another building that
can block the cool air, you will be helping your pet stay warm all
winter long.
Another way to keep your pets warm even when they have to stay
outside a lot is to provide them with an animal bed, covers, and
even sweaters. While it may seem a bit redundant to put a furry
sweater on top of your pet’s existent fur, it can help keep
pets warm to do this.
By following the above guidelines, and by remembering that you
must take precautions to keep your pets warm in the wintertime,
you can help avoid illness or even death that could otherwise be
caused by the cold weather.
