Once
we mature and grow older, we realize why all the adults weren’t
as enthused about winter as us kids! All of a sudden, the season
has more complications such as icy roads and shoveling the drive.
But even grownups can enjoy some of the activities in a child’s
winter wonderland! Sledding is an activity that the whole family
can enjoy, from the youngest tot to the oldest Dad. We all love
the feeling of speed, just on different levels. The steeper the
hill, the more speed you will build up, so remember—bunny
hills for babies!
The best places to go sledding are ones that you can easily access.
Depending on how snowy or hilly the landscape is, sledding spots
may or may not abound in your local area. Golf courses are generally
a sure bet because there will be at least a few medium to small
hills, perfect for gentle sledding with your youngsters. If you
live in a large neighborhood, there will probably a few hills which
the local kids consider the best places to go sledding.
If you are up for a drive, check out your nearest ski resort. Call
ahead of time to see if they have areas that allow sleds. If you
have been there before, you may know of some other hills nearby
outside of the resort’s property. Sometimes random finds prove
to be the best places to go sledding. The first sledders will always
have a tough time, though, packing down the powder to make a good
run.
Although some of the best places to go sledding are up in the mountains,
if you find a good spot in town, this may be the most convenient
for your family. If the kids are old enough to sled on their own,
just make sure that an adult is on hand to look out for cars if
the hill is near a street.
In mountainous landscapes, many farms will have good sledding hills
simply because of the lack of streets and other obstructions. Keep
in mind, though, that if the hill is on private property you should
know whether sledding is allowed in the area.
Accidents happen at even the safest and best places to go sledding!
Tell your children to roll sideways, off the sled and onto the ground,
if they feel out of control. That is the safest option when the
sled is going too fast. To prevent lots of tumbles, learn how to
use your feet to cautiously keep the speed to a manageable level.
