The
Holidays are a time for family get-togethers. Presents and decorations
add to the ambience of the season but the true meaning of Christmas,
Hanukah or Winter Solstice can be found in family relationships.
This is the season to pass on traditions practiced for generations
or perhaps start some new ones. Following are some ideas for family
activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Indoor Activities
-Tree trimming party: Invite family members of all ages. You may
prepare light refreshments. Have everyone bring one ornament to
add to the tree. Have your favorite Christmas music playing that
everyone can sing along to while trimming the tree. Don’t
forget to have plenty of Hot Chocolate and Cider on hand!
-Advent celebration: Advent has been celebrated for centuries in
North European Country’s. This simple celebration consists
of gathering family for Christmas stories, singing Christmas Carols
and lighting the four candles (one for each of the four Sunday’s
preceding Christmas) on the Advent Wreath. This is a Holiday you
can make your own by integrating your own family’s likes and
traditions.
-Chanukah begins on the 25th Kislev (evening of November 30th,
2001). The eight days following are days of rejoicing and praise.
On every night lights are lit to commemorate and publicize the miracle
performed for Israel some 2000 years ago. During Chanukah, it is
desirous to partake of more beautiful meals, to increase one's good
deeds, and generally to talk of the ancient miracles. All manner
of work may be carried out on Chanukah, but people generally refrain
from household duties while the Chanukah lights are lit.
Make this Hanukah special by remembering the reason for celebration
by having at least one dinner with the whole family and retelling
the story of Chanukah.
-Craft Parties: A Craft Party is a fun idea especially if you have
little ones-teenagers. Some craft ideas include, making Moravian
stars, ornament making, homemade cards, baking cookies and making
other culinary goodies to send to soldiers, friends or family.
Outdoor Activities
-Christmas Caroling
-Skiing or sledding parties
-Building Snowmen
-Christmas Light Decorating Party
-Hiring a carriage for a ride through the city or a horse pulled
sleigh for a ride along a country road.
All these activities should be fun for everyone. Keep the atmosphere
relaxed. Try not to stress out about making things just perfect,
rather focus on spending time together and deal with things like
the mess after everyone has gone.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
