The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played with two or more people. Its aim is to win wagers by making the highest ranked hand or convincing opponents to fold. It is usually played with a standard 52-card deck, although there are several variations of the rules and different deck sizes. A game can be played with anywhere from two to seven players, but it is best with only six or more. Each player must buy in for a fixed number of chips. These chips are called “table stakes” because the player can only win or lose what is on the table at the start of a hand.

After each player is dealt their two cards (known as hole cards) there is a round of betting. This is initiated by 2 mandatory bets called blinds put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. Then an additional card is dealt, known as the turn. This is followed by another card, known as the river, and then there is a final round of betting.

Once the betting has completed a player can make one of three moves: Call, Raise or Fold. A call means to match the current bet and stay in the hand; a raise is to increase the amount you bet and remain in the hand; and a fold is to discard your cards and walk away.

As well as knowing your own hands you must also be able to read other players. This can be done by paying attention to their betting patterns, and observing how they play the cards they have been dealt. A large part of poker is reading the opponent, and it is important to note that a great deal of bluffing in the game comes from making other players believe you have a strong hand.

The highest hand in poker is a royal flush, which consists of a king (K), queen (Q), jack (J) and an ace all of the same suit. Other high hands include four of a kind, which is made up of 4 matching cards of any rank; three of a kind, which consists of 3 cards of the same rank; and a straight, which consists of 5 consecutive cards of the same suit, which can be mixed (for example, 3 aces and 2 tens). A pair is two cards of the same rank and one unmatched card. If there is a tie, the highest pair wins the pot. You can also have a straight, but it is less common.
